Haud Ignota Loquor – I say things that are known

Tips and Guide for Linkoping, Sweden

I came here in Feb 2013 and I am writing this post based on my personal experience and all the information provided by my fellow Indians who have been living here for a long time (a big thanks to them) to help people who are coming from India or nearby countries of India. I have tried to put the smallest details here but if you have any questions then please don’t hesitate to ask through comments.
Before arrival in Linkoping

1. How to arrive in Linkoping.
2. Preparing for travel.
3. Finding an apartment.
After arrival in Linkoping
4. Register yourself at Skatteverket, Forsakringskassan (Swedish Social Insurance Agency)
5. Getting your personal number.
6. Getting a phone number.
7. Opening a bank account in Linkoping.
8. Local commutation.
9. Vegetarian Restaurants.
10. Shopping Stores.
11. Doctors and Medicine.
12. Some useful links.
13. Electricity contracts.
9. Swedish for immigrants.
15. Driving License.
16. Jobs.

1. How to arrive in Linkoping:

I know, the obvious answer is through Flight but I am going to tell you a cost-effective way. To come to Linkoping there are three ways:-
1. A flight to Stockholm Arlanda and then take a train or bus from Arlanda airport to Linkoping.
2. A flight to Copenhagen Kastrup airport and then take a train from the Copenhagen Kastrup airport to Linkoping.
3. A flight to Linkoping airport which is only operated by airline KLM from Amsterdam.
4. A flight to Gothenberg Airport and then a train/bus from Gothenberg to Linkoping. KLM and British Airways operate from this airport.

There is a direct train to Linkoping from Stockholm Arlanda Airport and a direct bus to Linkoping from Stockholm Bus Central.
So, choose your cost-effective way. Sometimes, the return ticket from India to any of the above destinations is cheaper as compared to the one-sided ticket.

2. Preparing for Travel:

It is advisable to keep the following things for Sweden before leaving India:-

1. A good jacket, woolen skull cap, hand gloves, and muffler. I suggest buying a woodland jacket. It works like wonder here. An overcoat also works but the jacket is more easy and insulates you from every single point from where cold or wind can enter inside.

2. Shoes:
For Men: Leather shoes, I will recommend for Woodland. It works here. You may also like to buy high-neck shoes for winter.

For Women: Boots with flat heels. Boots with high heels will make them tired soon because if you do not have a vehicle here then the only option you have is to walk and take local transport.

For Both: Keep a pair of sports shoes as they will help you in spring and summer for walking.

3. Sweaters: I would like to recommend you not to put on your many or heavy sweaters because when you will go out then you can not survive only in your sweater, you have to wear a jacket but once you are inside any building then you will not be able to tolerate your sweater or even your jacket. It is always warm inside with the help of heaters.

4. Travel card/Swedish currency: I recommend taking a SEK travel card which you can buy from any HDFC bank or Axis bank branch in India. It helps a lot while doing shopping here and if you are not going to have some cash in your hand during your initial days then it will work for you like wonder.

In Sweden, every shop retailer has card machines as the Swedish government is targeting to stop the hard cash flow lately. If you are planning to bring Euros in cash and get it converted into SEK from a money exchanger then please keep in mind that there is no money exchanger at Linkoping Airport. You can do that in Linkoping City. But if you are coming through Stockholm then you can find one there. Note that, Euros are not accepted in any of the stores here. Cash is accepted only at the Grocery stores, all the other type of stores accepts only cards. So, it is better to have an International credit/debit card with you to do the transactions if in case you do not have a travel card with you.
The location of the money exchanger in Linkoping City are below

https://maps.app.goo.gl/apYvyveb4uNoqMmu9
https://maps.app.goo.gl/fnZ4V73bzV7zY2uE7

5. Travel Insurance: If you are coming here for a long time then it may take some time for your personal number to arrive and without a personal number or co-ordination number you will not be able to have any medical assistance here, so, it’s better to take your own travel insurance for say 1-2 month from ICICI Lombard or Bajaj Alliance ( these two are going good these days) but don’t spend too much on them.

6. Medicines: Bring some medicines with you for emergency purposes. You can bring 3 months of medicines with a doctor’s subscription and put them in a check-in bag, generally, no body checks about it but why take a chance? Do remember to put first aid small essentials like band-aids, cotton, antiseptic tubes, etc.

7. If you are an Indian food lover then it is highly recommended to bring a flat base pressure cooker and a kadhai for deep frying. You will not find them here easily and if you get them then they are very expensive.

In Linkoping, there are no gas burners, hot plates are used so bring your utensils with a flat bottom surface.

8. Grocery items for initial days. Put everything in a check-in bag and usually everything gets passed through customs but it is always good to check for the restricted items with the airline you are going to travel with.

3. Finding an apartment:

Few things to keep in mind while looking for apartment:

1. In Sweden, there is no deposit required to get a rental apartment, if someone asks for this then don’t fall for it as it can be a scam.

2. It is very common that you can get options for a rental apartment as a second-hand contract. A first-hand contract is when you rent the apartment directly from the rental agency while the second-hand contract is when someone who has rented the apartment from the rental agency is subletting the apartment to you. This is legal but the renter must give you a contract. Always ask for the contract.

3. It is very common that the rental apartments are provided non-furnished (unless it is mentioned specifically about the furnished apartment), this means that there will be no bed, table, chairs, sofa, lights in the room, etc. Only wardrobes and lights in the kitchen and bathrooms. One needs to arrange this stuff by themselves.

How to find the apartment?

Well, you will not like the system here for renting an apartment. In Sweden, everything goes on a queue system (In most of the stores you will find a token machine in a corner and you need to take your token and wait for your turn) so once your dates of arrival are finalized register yourself to one of the housing websites to earn queue points. Normally it takes around 3 months for a person to get an apartment on rent. However, the jugaad system is present here in this case. If you ask your employer for it then they might help you in this or if your employer knows any landlord directly then he can help you in making a deal.

Like India, there is no 2 months or 3 months rent as a security amount system here. You just need to pay the rent for next month by the 30th or 31st of every month. The house rent normally includes laundry, a heating system, heated water, and drinking water.
Below are the links which may help you in finding an apartment in Linkoping:-

You can also contact these websites and send in your work contract to show them that you have a job here and you will have a regular income to be able to pay the rent.

If you do not find any apartment before your arrival then you can try some temporary accommodation options.

Check with Sky Hotel apartments, Sky Hotel apartments provide two types of accommodation, one is the Hotel and the other one is an apartment in the town.

Hotel apartments:

These are the furnished apartments with most of the basic facilities like kitchen, bed etc provided.

Check out their page for more information:
http://www.skyhotelapartments.se/Linkoping/Hotel_apartments/default_en.aspx

Town apartments:

Minimum rental period one month, Fully Furnished

Check out their page for more information:

http://www.skyhotelapartments.se/Linkoping/Town_apartments/default_en.aspx

4. There is also another studio apartment rental agency named Apartdirect

4. Register yourself at Skatteverket, Forsakringskassan (Swedish Social Insurance Agency):

As soon as you arrive in Linkoping,  the first you must do is to register yourself and your family members at the Swedish tax office which is Skatteverket http://www.skatteverket.se. The tax office is in downtown near the bus stop Kungsgatan, check their website to find the exact address. During the same visit, they will register you at Försäkringskassan, which is the agency that ensures that you get the benefits and allowances you are entitled to. The Swedish social insurance covers everyone who lives and works in Sweden. It provides financial protection for families, children, persons with disabilities,  if you fall sick and can not work, etc
Visit this link:  http://www.forsakringskassan.se/sprak/eng

Note: There are no charges for these registrations, however, I would recommend you to take someone known or a colleague from your workspace with you to help you as some staff at the Skatteverket does not speak English.

5. Getting Your Personal Number:

During your visit for the registration at Skatteverket, they will apply for a personal number for you and your family. All you need to do is to take your passport, visa, and marriage certificate (in case you are along with your spouse) in originals with you and fill out a form for your personal number. They will make copies of your documents and register your request. Your personal number will arrive soon.
Note: There are no charges for these registrations

6. Getting a Phone number:

You would need a local phone number and you can buy a prepaid number from stores named 7-Eleven, Pressbyran, Phone house, and Hemkop. There are prepaid numbers available from Telecom operators like Telenor, Telia, Tele2, 3, Comviq, and Lyca mobile.
Comviq and Lyca mobile are the ones which have the cheap rates for international calling. One another alternative is that you buy the Mobile data from them and then use any Voip based service for local calling.

7. Opening a bank account in Linkoping:

Opening a bank account is a job of 15 minutes but very few banks allow you to open a bank account without a Swedish ID, but you can try at different banks if they can open an account for you based on your passport. Banks in Linkoping are Danske Bank, Handelsbanken, Swed Bank, Nordea, SEB Bank and Lansforsakringar bank. Among all of these banks only Handelsbanken has their Internet banking in English and Nordea Bank has a mobile application in English.

Some banks may open an account for you with your personal number and your passport as identity but they will not provide Internet banking until you give them a copy of Swedish ID card however you can use their Swedish mobile phone banking application. If you get this option then take it because you would need a bank account to receive your salary from your employer.
8. Digital Login and quick payments (like UPI):
As soon as your bank account is open and the internet banking is activated, you can activate a Bank ID and Swish from your Internet Banking.
Bank ID and Swish are very important and are used in day-to-day life in Sweden. Bank ID is like a method to identify you digitally on any digital platform, you need it to login to the bank website, to declare your income tax, to send money to someone, to pay the bills, etc almost for everything.
Swish is a quick payment app like UPI, it is connected to your phone number and using this app, you can make payments or send money to someone to their phone number.
9. Local Commutation:
For local commutation, you can walk, use a bicycle or take the bus. You can find more information about city buses at www.ostgotatrafiken.se. All buses originate and end at Resecentrum which is the central point of Linkoping, the bus station and Linkoping central train station are connected with each other.

You can not buy tickets on the bus so you have to obtain a bus card from their website or use their app. You can buy single tickets, a 24-hour day pass, and a monthly pass.

Note: Once you punch the card in the bus you can travel to many places or change buses during the first hour, all you need to do is to just punch your card every time you board a bus. If you are still under the first hour then the machine will give a green signal otherwise it will give a red signal and then you have to take tickets again.

Ex: Suppose you boarded the bus at 10:00 AM then you can change the bus and go to another place at the same price till 11:00 AM. However, after 11:00 AM if you board the bus then you have to again swipe your bus card to purchase a ticket.

10. Vegetarian Restaurants:

If you are a vegetarian then you don’t have to worry much, you will get limited vegetarian options in restaurants here.

1. Mc McDonald/ Burger King / Max: McDonald's has vegetarian/vegan options in all over Sweden. You can find many outlets in Linkoping.

3. Yogi: The only Indian restaurant which is present downtown at Platensgatan 5.
Despite of only Indian restaurant in city it does not has good reviews for Indian food.

There is a shop called Diechmen in Granden Mall at Downtown. Here you will get shoes at a reasonable price with lots of variety.

12. Doctor and Medicines:

Once you get your personal number you will be allotted to a clinic based on your residential area. You can call the clinic’s phone number from 8am to 5 pm to talk about your problem and make an appointment to see the doctor. You have to pay an initial amount ~ SEK 1200 in a year and if your expenditure goes beyond that then it is covered automatically by your health insurance. So no more payments in the hospital for any kind of hospitalization after SEK 1200.

You will not be able to purchase prescribed medicines without a doctor’s prescription and you will also not get any medicines with your Indian doctor’s prescription. You need to pay ~SEK1200 for medicines in a year after which you will get it for free. So, it is better to bring your stock of medicines for at least the first six months. Note that, the doctors do not prescribe antibiotics here until they feel a real need for it.

Prescribed Medicines for Children till the age of 18 years are free.

13. Some useful websites:
www.blocket.se   –>   Website for sale and purchase like olx.com and sulekha.com in India
www.momondo.se –> Travel website like makemytrip.com and yatra.com
www.compriser.se –> A comparison website for comparisons of Insurance, electricity charges etc.
www.ryanair.com –> This is the cheapest airline to go to different places in Europe.
www.netonnet.se      –> Online electronic items store.
www.dustin.se          –> Online electronic items store.

14. Electricity Subscriptions:

If your apartment’s electricity is not sponsored (if you are working at the University and staying in an apartment provided by the University then electricity contracts and bills are taken care of by the University) then you are the one who needs to take up an electricity contract.
In Sweden, electricity is traded like a commodity in the market so there are always variations in the rates of electricity. Here, two companies are involved to provide electricity in your apartment, one company is responsible for laying down the electricity wiring network and the other company is responsible for sending power to your apartment through electricity wire.
You can choose different between electricity (they call it Energy in Sweden) providers as they have different rates per kwh but you can not choose between different electricity wiring network providers.
Every consumer has to pay two bills, a fixed yearly charge for using an electric wiring network, and your energy/power/electricity bill based on your consumption.
You can use the website www.compriser.se to see comparisons for consumption charges per kwh provided by different electricity vendors and the electricity price-kwh is normally cheaper during summer and expensive in winter so if you make a contract in summer then you will pay less in winter.
You can go for a contract between three options:-
1. Fixed: The price that you select at the time of taking the contract will be fixed till the duration of your contract (like for 1 year, 6 months, 3 months etc).
2. Movable: The price will move up or down according to the daily market rate of electricity.
3. Both: It includes 50% of the fixed price and 50% of the movable price till the duration of your contract.
If you take a contract for one year then the price/kwh will be less as compared to prices in other options. It may be possible that this is not true always so better you check when you are making a contract.
Two things to keep in mind before making a contract:-
4. Notice period i.e. while making a contract check about the notice period time to be given by you to the electricity provider in case you are changing your electricity provider. It is also advisable that before making a contract with another electricity provider you call your current provider and ask them if they can give you the price/kwh which you are getting from another provider. They don’t mind when you take the name of another provider.
5. Type of home: If you are living in an apartment then select apartment or select villa. There is always a difference between price/kwh for villa and apartment in which apartment is cheaper than villa.

    Hi Haritha!

Thanks for visiting my blog and the purpose is to give answers to most of the questions which one can have before arriving in new country. I also had questions like you.

Well, coming to your question, Visit this link

    http://www.hdfcbank.com/personal/products/cards/prepaid-cards/forexplus-card

and if you expand the section "What are the charges of the HDFC Bank ForexPlus Card?" you will find there that SEK travel card is listed there.

But, there is one catch here, this card is not very much available in all HDFC bank branches as the demand for SEK card is low, they will try to give you Euro travel card but you can enquire about it in the HDFC bank branches in your area. Generally, HDFC bank guys may tell you that this branch is not Foreign currency exchange branch so please visit other branch which deals in foreign currency, so ask them about that branch and enquire about it.

If you don't find it through HDFC bank take it through Axis bank, although Axis bank's SEK travel card has more card issuance fees as compared to HDFC bank so try for both options.

If in any way you do not find this card any of the HDFC branch then try to contact head branch of the city or try to talk with Branch manager. You can take Euro card as a last option but it will be a bit expensive for you because every time you will swap your card Euro will be converted in SEK and the ATM machine will levy its own exchange rate with exchange fees, same is the case when you withdraw SEK from ATM machine.

Hello, thank you so much for taking the time to compile all this information, it is an awesome and helpful blog.

I have one question to everyone about work permits. After your company applied for your work permit, how long did it take to process?

I have accepted a job offer in Linkoping at a moderately sized company and am trying to estimate the time I will have to move.

    Thanks!

    Hi!

If all the documents are proper and in place then embassy shouldn't take more than 45 days to deliver your UT cards (Work and Residence permit) with subject to the condition that you visit embassy to provide your Bio-metric as soon as possible.

For me, it took less than 45 days.
